The Army Specialized Training Assistance Program (STRAP) provides financial support to physicians completing specialized training in designated areas of concentration. The program is intended for physicians who have been accepted into or are currently enrolled in an accredited medical residency program.

STRAP participants receive a monthly stipend of more than $3,110 while completing their residency training. This assistance can help reduce the financial burden associated with medical education and allow participants to remain focused on developing their clinical skills.

In exchange for the stipend, participants incur a service obligation with the Army Reserve. For every six months the stipend is received, or any portion of a six-month period, the participant serves one year in the Army Reserve.

After completing residency, physicians may fulfill their obligation through an Army Reserve Troop Program Unit (TPU), the Army Medical Department Professional Medical Command (APMC), or as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA). These service options allow physicians to apply their specialized medical training in a military setting while supporting the Army Reserve’s medical capabilities.

Eligibility is limited to physicians who have been accepted into or are currently participating in an accredited medical residency program. Eligible specialties are based on the Army’s current staffing requirements and are identified in the Select Reserve Incentive Program Memo.
