The Medical and Dental School Stipend Program (MDSSP), offered through the U.S. Army Reserve, provides substantial financial support for students pursuing careers in medicine or dentistry. With medical and dental school tuition reaching as much as $70,000 per year, particularly at private institutions, MDSSP can help reduce the financial burden associated with completing a professional degree.
Students accepted into an accredited medical or dental school may be eligible to receive a monthly stipend exceeding $3,110. This support allows participants to focus more fully on the demands of their education and clinical training.
In exchange for the stipend, participants incur a service obligation with the U.S. Army Reserve. For every six months the stipend is received, or any portion of a six-month period, the participant serves one year in the Army Reserve. This service obligation begins after completion of the residency program, allowing participants to concentrate on medical or dental school and postgraduate training before beginning their required service.
MDSSP is integrated with the civilian medical education system. Participants attend civilian medical or dental schools and, when applicable, take part in the civilian Match Day process used to determine residency placement. Residency training is completed at civilian institutions through the National Resident Matching Program, supporting a seamless transition from professional school to residency while preparing participants for careers that combine civilian medical practice with military service.
