The Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) for Medical School, offered by the U.S. Army, is a comprehensive and advantageous scholarship for students accepted to or currently enrolled in accredited medical or osteopathy schools. This program is exclusively available to U.S. citizens aspiring to become medical professionals. The HPSP covers the entire duration of the medical education, up to four years, underpinning the financial aspects of the education journey.
Notably, the HPSP encompasses full tuition coverage and a $20,000 bonus, ensuring that students can focus on their academic pursuits without the burden of educational expenses. The program also provides a generous monthly stipend of over $2,700.00 to assist students with living expenses and day-to-day needs. Moreover, the HPSP considers various academic fees and offers reimbursement for these expenses.
One unique aspect of the program is the specialized training opportunities. For 45 days, the participants receive the pay of a Second Lieutenant during their Active Duty Training, integrating them more closely with the military environment and responsibilities. While participating in the HPSP program, students are appointed and commissioned as Second Lieutenants, branch unassigned, giving them a prestigious standing in the Army ranks.
Upon graduation from medical school, participants are commissioned as Captains in the Army Medical Corps, marking the transition from students to medical professionals within the Army. The service commitment associated with the HPSP is meticulously structured. Participants incur an Active Duty Obligation of two years for the first two years, or a portion thereof, of program participation. If participation extends beyond two years, an additional obligation of half a year is added for each additional half-year or portion of program participation.
For individuals seeking a fulfilling career in medicine with the support of the U.S. Army, the HPSP for Medical School presents a unique blend of educational support and professional development. This program alleviates medical education's financial challenges and prepares students for a distinguished role in the Army Medical Corps.
